Iranian Nuclear Crisis
- First interest in nuclear capabilities in 1950s after the US Atoms for Peace
- US assistance through UAP ended in 1979 with the revolution
- Developed elaborate nuclear fuel cycles
- Also developed extensive enrichment capabilities
- Many negotiations and sanctions were held and implemented between 2002 and 2015 to try and curb the program
- Negotiations ended with a Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action which took place July 2015
- This gave Iran a 25 year period to use nuclear energy in very specific ways
- Many sanctions were still in place with the Joint Plan
- January 2016, all sanctions against Iran nuclear related actions were stopped
- On May 8, 2018 President Donald Trump stated that the US wanted to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action
- Now President Trump intends to reinstate nuclear sanctions back on Iran
- Iran has openly stated their disappointment and displeasure that the US wishes to reapply sanctions towards its nuclear program
